RedAvatar: Yes and it's not surprising. I bought Overseer shortly after release because I already had a DVD drive and the game came with both DVD and CD version (the DVD version having MPEG2 video which is of a lot better quality). Even back then it was a massive headache to get it working because the software included didn't do the job. The game was designed back when the DVD players contained the MPEG2 decoder instead of the software. I recall you even had to pick a DVD brand from a list to get it to work and it still didn't because my DVD player wasn't on there and needed software. With some luck I managed to get it going but it was pretty buggy with glitches left and right and it was very crash prone.
Too bad since the quality was a lot better. Waltc: I actually owned one of the DVD drives that Overseer (like you, I bought the game shortly after release) supported in its configuration files-a Creative Labs drive with an MPEG2 hardware decoder on an ISA/PCI? Card (I think! Back then Creative made lots of different stuff-or at least packaged and marketed a lot of stuff beyond sound cards.) It's been so long ago that I don't remember whether I had trouble with the game-if I had I would probably remember it.I was disappointed with the drive and decoder, though-as the industry as a whole took years after that-lots of years-before DVD replaced the CD as the normal drive in most systems. For years the drive sat there largely unused by me-waiting on all the DVD titles I just knew were coming any day! I uninstalled the thing when it got long in the tooth.now, if only I could remember what I.did. with the darn thing!;)The version of Overseer I bought contained both the CD and DVD versions, and the MPEG2 was a.lot.

better. I don't understand why the existing MPEG2 footage could not be integrated into the CD version of the game-it should be. Well we proved it was playable by converting mpeg2 files to mpeg1 which you didn't need a decoder but the program still asked for the dvd express even though it wasn't being used. Years ago you could get the video card with the built in decorder as hardware but those days are long gone. Anyway when fedora comes out no-one will care about playing overseer.well not for a while anyway. Plumgas: I got the dvd version working by simply playing as software mode & not hardware mode. You have just use your arrow keys for movement & not the built in movement device installed with the game.
Same here - only software mode worked for me. Hardware mode would give me graphics artifacts. I ran the game on a quad-core PC with WinXP SP3 and Geforce GTX 480 graphics card with latest Nvidia drivers after doing everything described here:I also could not right-click the mouse (which would let you navigate the 3D environment). Right-clicking instantly froze the game, and I would have to Ctrl-Alt-Del to bring up taskbar to end the non-responding game. Sometimes the taskbar wouldn't appear, and I would have to reset the PC. I also had frequent freezes that would randomly occur - once or twice every hour of game play - and it always occurred in a 3D environment while I was moving. Also, sometimes a video clip would not appear (black screen) while dialog would still play.
If I reloaded an earlier save to see the video clip, it would show. Needless to say, I saved frequently. That's about all the issues I had. I just ran the game yesterday. Despite all the problems, I was glad to have replayed the DVD version all the way through. I would imagine running the CD version might also have given me freezes, since the freezes always occurred in 3D environments, and never in video clips. Those who can't play the DVD version can look inside the DVD and play the video clips directly to see what they look like.
You have to rename the file extension to MPG and play with any video player such as VLC. You will notice the picture quality is not that hot due to the technical limitations of the time. For one thing, they are in non-anamorphic widescreen.

Wonder if anyone can have a looksie on how to make Tex Murphy: Overseer work, if even possible.I've tried just about every solution and wrapper I can think of on Windows 10 x64.So far dgVoodoo 2 is the only one that works, mostly. It has severe issues with stuttering, mouse capture, cursor flickering, some puzzles outright don't work.WineD3D works for the 2D puzzles that dgVoodoo 2 can't handle, but 3D is completely textureless in WineD3D. Runs without stuttering though;)In DxWnd the intro starts and plays perfectly, but immediately freezes when it goes to the main menu.
Logname info:OverseerGOG - GOG version.OverseerDVD-no special codec - no systemwide codecs installedOverseerDVD-FFMPEG - latest FFMPEG with MPEG2 decoding installedOverseerDVD-DVDExpress - DVDExpress for MPEG2 decoding (recommended to use). Also, after mashing some keys before it closes, Overseer original DVD comes up with that it's unable to start MPEG2 driver. Despite showing the intro video just fine. But why I decided to try different codecs anyways.Logs don't seem to contain anything interesting, but here ya go. Yesterday I tried this game in version DVD + 1.04 patch in Win7.With the default DxWnd setting, I only had a black screen and the game crashed. After trying some flags I finally got a picture of MPEG2 error.
After clicking OK, the game crashed.I read one forum and set in tex.inilockvideo=1and also MIDIMute=YesI think it solved the sos905.dll error in log. Then I set up MIDI manually in the game menu.It is also recommended to set buffer to 240 in RSX.Finally I got the game to work when I set up the MPEG2 'Chromatic MPact' driver in the game menu. The video was not centered and was smaller than the window size, but the game worked.Unfortunately, I tried next MPEG2 drivers in the game settings and it made the game not run again.I was unable to repeat the situation with the functional game (I saved the profile, but it does not help).I'll try it again tonight. Unfortunately, my experiments were not successful here on Win7 (with DVD + patch 1.04).I tried various guides for MPEG2 (setting ffdshow and then setting Xing in the game menu, LAV filters, installing Stinkys MPEG2 Codec etc.) nothing worked, still a black screen.Nothing helped me. My big mistake, SOS9505.DLL has nothing to deal with diagnostics and is a MIDI interface library. So, the crash seems caused by the midi playing. This doesn't happen here on my Win10, but I can't hear any midi sound, so maybe the reason is because midi is disabled.I fear I got to this conclusion a little late, you two (AtlasRedux & Huh) already made some experiment here.Big news! I went into the game setup screen, unchecked the 'mute' checkbox in the midi section and the game immediately crashed! I'm ready to debug the problem!!! SOS9505 - original game.DLL' is the same as mine.'
SOS9505 - GOG version.DLL' has the same functions and the same number (92), but different size. Here at W7, behavior and crash are the same with both versions.Maybe VirtualMIDISynth will provide a better MIDI Mapper for the system.I did an experiment and renamed sos9503.dll (from Fable). The game crashes, but the end of the protocol is interesting. It looks like searching function sosMIDIFlushDigitalPatches, but sos9503.dll does not have this function.
